Goddammit, I rewatched the 4th episode with the old beach cottage, and I've just realized something. They retconned Tracey's death, and that's why they said that GM had no mother figure before Lucille. They've moved Tracey's death to years earlier. Goddamnit!
In season 1, set in 2003, the Narrator used to tell us that Tracey died two years ago, i.e. 2001. We also get a brief glimpse of a wedding video from 1989, with Gob setting Tracey's hair on fire. Therefore, the marriage lasted 12 years, and GM grew up with a mother for the first dozen years of his life.
SPOILERS
But in season 5, Michael talks about his family owning the cottage back in the 1980s, not including the 1990s at all, and the Narrator says that Michael's not been to the cottage "in over twenty years" in 2015, making Tracey's death 1995 or earlier. They've fucking cut the marriage in half and made GM about 5 when his mother died, depending on which version of his birthday you go with.
They've fucking killed her off earlier. The bastards. Way to make her more of a non-entity plot device than an actual human being!
I've thought about rewatching the whole season again trying to do a timeline like I did for season 4, but this fucking depresses me. Not to mention Lucille's casual lines about other events that apparently took place at Escondite. "My mother died here, Gob was born here, and this was your father's (bleep)pad." Gob was born there? Lucille talks like her mother's death happened before Gob's birth, but actually we know when Nana died, because it was a plot in season 1. Nana died "six months ago" at Spring Break 2004, but now that's been shoved back too. Goddammit, they keep redoing the backstory, and I can't keep up.
