Year of the Rat

This new coronavirus in China is very scary, as the death toll rises and China puts cities under quarantine. They even cancelled movie releases and closed down theatres on this Lunar New Year weekend to prevent further outbreak. I heard there was even one case in the US, from a person who visited Wuhan. What a terrifying crisis. I'm grateful I will be able to see my family for Lunar New Year, and I'm sad for those who won't be able to.

Meanwhile the Senate Impeachment trial has been going this week. When they said 24 hours each, I didn't realize that meant split over 3 days, so it could be 8-hours a day. I guess that makes sense. Still a sham trial, but we knew Mitch was going to rig it for Trump.

There was also some news about Saudi Prince MBS personally hacking Jeff Bezos's phone with an app and somehow participating in that attempt to blackmail Bezos over an affair. That, along with the assassination of that Washington Post reporter, are prime examples of how tangled and shitty the world is today.

So, uh, Happy Lunar New Year, such as it is.

Post Crisis

I didn't realize this weekend was the 4th annual Women's March, as well as MLK weekend. Also another awards show I guess, but it's been a disappointingly non-diverse slate this year, with Tarantino's stupid film continuing to win. Hollywood so in love with itself again, awarding the same-old boring people again. Yawn.

On TV, the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover finally finished. Really terrible 4th episode that kept using the same dumb side-quest things that killed momentum. No real explanation of Spectre's power and what use the Paragons were in him fighting the Anti-Monitor. So anticlimatic. The 5th episode was better, with the paragons actually fighting real opponents instead of vague shadow-things. Then they gave Oliver yet another tribute and founded a Superfriends group with a special table at the Hall of Justice. Honestly, the whole Crisis was just an excuse to unite all the superheroes on one Earth-prime, and to reset Supergirl permanently so that Lex Luthor would stay alive and rewrite history.

But it's weird that Oliver still narrated a new multiverse arising while we saw other DC heroes on other Earths, yet in the latest Supergirl episode, Brainiac claims that there are no other Earths anymore. That doppelgangers from other universes are refugees on Earth-Prime. So, like, make up your minds, writers! I'm not sure I like where the Brainiac plot is going on Supergirl, and I wish they could have fixed Kara and Lena's relationship. Their feud is so tiring and disappointing.

Meanwhile Batwoman is apparently using this doppelganger thing to bring an alternate-universe Beth to Gotham. I mean, yet another Kane sister? I was just starting to hope that Kate and her step-sister Mary were going to spend more time together and hug more, but now this!

Grey January

Well there's another Democratic debate tonight, after Cory Booker dropped out of the race. If only we can get the stupid billionaires to drop out too. Also, Nancy Pelosi is supposed to send over the articles of impeachment today, or is having some sort of meeting about it I think. The news comes so fast it's overwhelming. I did hear the discouraging news about a Wisconsin judge wanting to purge thousands of voters. Not sure if that can be appealed further. At least we got a few Republicans to vote to limit Trump's war powers in Iran. It's still a clusterfuck over the assassination.

The Australian fires have continued, but they are hoping for rainy weather soon. But most of the media has been ignoring the earthquakes in Puerto Rico. I had just started seeing tourism TV ads for Puerto Rico lately, and now they have another catastrophe to deal with. So sad. So many crises in this new year.

At least Season 2 of the Inbestigators is out now, so I binge watched it this weekend to cheer myself up a little. I also went to see a very funny play called Ripcord about two feuding women in an assisted living facility. They make a bet with each other, resulting in escalating pranks as well as some revelations about their families. Felt good to laugh for a while.

Golden

Well I forgot about the Golden Globes last night, but congrats to Awkwafina, who won for The Farewell, and boo to Tarantino's stupid Hollywood fantasy winning over Knives Out or Dolemite is My Name. Self-indulgent fucker mangling up real murder history and disrespecting Bruce Lee to wax nostalgic about white people's good old days in L.A. Fuck you, Tarantino, for being just as idiotic as the Coen brothers' Hail Caesar! white Hollywood nostalgia. Dolemite at least was about real entertainment history, and it was funny too.

Anyway, I'm glad that stars took the time to speak out on issues like climate change and abortion rights. Celebrities absolutely should use their platforms to help the rest of us. It's certainly better than Hollywood being navel-gazing, in love with itself, making meta movies about movie-making. I hope that the so-called awards season gets more diverse; I'm not really interested in this confusing array of cable and streaming shows that keep getting touted as the next prestige thing.

Oh, also, I finally found an update about the Miss Fisher movie that missed a 2019 release. It's coming to Australia first, then the US in March 2020. I really hope the "select theaters" release will be near me, otherwise I'll have to sign up for Acorn TV to watch it. One bright spot in the chaotic mess of this New Year. I hope things will be better by Tet (Lunar New Year).
