Elementary episode 2

Elementary appears in my area on three separate channels that mirror CBS's schedule, and yet somehow my Tivo screwed up and didn't record it Thursday! Thankfully, I was able to watch it on the CBS website, and I loved it.

It's just what I wanted, reminiscent of the 1950s series with Ronald Howard. It's not a straight adaptation of the canon, but the mysteries have some recognizable elements from the books. I loved Holmes mentioning his brain-attic theory, and that the new detective is called Bell. I was so startled when Holmes set fire to the violin, but I'm glad it survived in the end, and that Holmes got back to it.

Even the mystery plot seemed reminiscent of Sign of Four, what with the twins and the dispute about whether to share their inheritance with others. The writers just dropped the stuff about the pact with the Indian murderers/thieves, and the more problematic stuff with Jonathan Small and the pygmy Tonga. So it's partly new and original, while keeping the proper Holmes flavor.

Hopefully by the next episode (two weeks from now), my DVR will be working better. I think it's some weird conflict with my other recordings. Maybe I'll have to drop one of them.

I liked the pilot episode better. Lucy Liu does a great job as Watson.

Cheers!
